Describe how working in a metapacking plant affects Ona and Elzbieta

Though she starts the novel as a housewife, Ona soon must go to work in order to provide for the family. The hard labor breaks her body, and, after giving birth to her first child, she is raped and beaten by one of the factory foremen.
