How does Amy Tan create the tension between Suyuan Woo and Jing Mei Woo in The Joy Luck Club?

I think the mother daughter tension is largely based on cultural tradition, misunderstandings and a refusal to understand each other's feelings. Jing Mei does not consider that her mother's tragic past has made her into who she is. June only sees her mother's stubborn insistence to mould her into something she is not. Mother does not consider the pressure her daughter has being caught between two cultures. June is drawn to her own ideas and modern culture. This divide and lack of meaningful communication causes much conflict.
