The ability to fly is an important symbol of freedom. From the start, Kidd uses the motif of flight in storytelling, as a symbol in their everyday life (making quilts), as well as in Sarah's desire to not only be physically free, but mentally free as well. This is an apt title for a children's book because the freedom and flight of birds is something that everyone understands, and also something that everyone dreams about at one time or another.
