Lady Bracknell is the play's antagonist. Her character is a representation of Victorian classism. Lady Bracknell interferes with both pending marriages, and she refuses to allow Gwendolen to marry Jack when she learns he is an orphan. She also disapproves of Cecily as a wife for Algernon.... at least until she learns that Cecily is wealthy.
