Was the presence of the author in the book disruptive or appropriate

The author is telling this story. Some critics do not like the fact that she is a white author telling a black woman's story: a person of "white privilege" relating a story of black subjugation. I tend not to judge this book on those terms. I thought that Rebecca Skloot handled Henrietta's story with respect and empathy.
