Having survived his competition in the hunger games, Haymitch has become an advisor to the competitors from his district. He wants them to stay alive and have a chance to compete. His view of the entire proceeding is skewed in that he is often (more often than not) drunk or hung over; his winning has obviously cost him a great deal personally.
