People think Mr. Venner is crazy because he is not interested in material possessions. He is happy to poke around the Pyncheon Street neighbourhood just making people smile. This is a relief to Clifford who is surrounded by goal oriented and demanding people. At the end of chapter 10 Clifford says he wants happiness but the narrator tells us that happiness will not come to Clfford unless he is in the garden with his family.
