Dr. Mortimer wishes Sherlock Holmes to investigate the murder of Sir Charles Baskerville. Sir Charles had been disturbed by the legend of the hound and died under mysterious circumstances. Dr. Mortimer also tells Holmes that he found the footprints of a giant hound surrounding Sir Charles' body, something he had not told the press.
