Why does the coughing and sneezing worry Jerry? What comparison does the author make in his case and why?

This is for Part III, chapter name Tangos.

Jerry knows that there are sick animals all over the building which means the virus was airborn. Jerry is worried that the virus has spread to people. I'm not sure what the comparison is though, I will look for my copy.
