By Monday morning— the day after he dissected Monkey O53— Dan Dalgard had decided to bring the problem with his monkeys to the attention of USAMRIID, at Fort Detrick.

Initial diagnosis:

A pathologist at the Institute had inspected the meat very carefully and had given it a tentative diagnosis of simian hemorrhagic fever— harmless to humans...."
