What were some of the steps that the villagers had taken to control the spread of the disease on their own (from the Hot Zone)? Are any of these practices still used today

Villages used "reverse quarantine" where a healthy village shuts down and blockades themselves from the people that might bring them a disease. I believe this was used in the recent Ebola scare in afflicted areas.
