The following line from Chapter 23 contains an allusion. Who was Ajax? What does Preston mean when he calls Gene Johnson the "Ajax of this biological war"?

"Gene Johnson, the Ajax of this biological war, paced back and forth..." (285)

Ajax was a Greek hero in ancient metrology. His great size and stature made him a formidable opponent. Gene was supposed to be an Ajax-like figure in this biological war.
