if the news crew had shown up and filmed the biocontainment operation would the strory change

If the news had gotten a hold of the story, I think it would have led to mass hysteria. This disease had no treatment, picture the panic that would have ensued had people known. Those dealing with the disease had their own panic, and they knew what they were dealing with, but the majority of people wouldn't grasp what was happening. We also have a problem with the media over-reporting and reporting information that is speculation..... anything to increase ratings. A case like this might possibly create pandemonium unless reported correctly.
