How does the position of testing blood that contained a hot virus affect the stress and wellbeing of the characters in the book?

It was hugely stressful. Despite safety precautions like HAZMAT suits, the virus was easily picked up. Also, during the 1980's, not as much was known about the virus as is known today. They did not fully understand the precautions they needed to take when working with infected blood.
