The Hot Zone is the area where a direct and immediate threat exists. A Warm Zone is the area where a potential threat exists. A Cold Zone is the area where no significant threat exists. Preston uses these zones for symbolic and emotional impact as well as for scientific/military terms. Extreme temperature zones give a point of reference to the reader when discussing the dangers of viral and biological hazards.
