Kitum Cave is of great significance because in the 1980's two visitors to the cave contracted Marburg virus; Charles Monet and a fifteen year old boy. When USAMRIID inspected the cave, they found no evidence of Marburg virus. It is considered ground zero for the virus. The Monkey House was also full of a large concentration of the virus.
