The Horse-Dealer's Daughter

At the conclusion of this tale, what does the story tell us about "life" and how do people "respond" to life's dilemmas and "emergencies"?

I suppose life can take a turn in directions you least suspect. The doctor was not even aware that he was in love with Mabel before he saved her. Mabel was expecting to kill herself rather than me saved and then married.
