why does gandalf leave them at the edge of mirkwood? what does he give dwarves to help them with their journey? what does gandalf believe is necessary for the dwarves mission to succeed?

1) Gandalf needed to attend a meeting with the council of White Wizards. He had "some pressing business away south."

2) Gandalf gave them advice, "Good-bye! Be good, take care of yourselves – and DON'T LEAVE THE PATH!"

3) Gandalf believes the dwarves must add a fourteenth member to the party. He says they need a burglar to succeed.
