Who is Roac? What two major events does Roac tell the dwarves?

Roac is a wise bird who can communicate with certain creatures; he seeks to avoid war but also aids in destruction of Smaug. He tells Bilbo and the dwarves that Smaug is dead and that they should not trust the Master of Lake-town.
