I'm not sure which plan you are referring to but I'll go with chapter 1. Thorin doesn't want to go through the forest which is fraught with danger. Thorin wants to go through the mountain because his grandfather ruled dwarves within the mountain. They would use the elaborate tunnels to go through. Gandalf has a key into the mountain that he got from Thorin's grandfather.
