What mistakes do the dwarves make in the forest up to the point where they decide to leave the path?

The dwarves disregard Beorn's warning about the stream and cross it in a boat. Bombur falls in and immediately falls asleep, something that forces the other dwarves to carry him.

They see lights flickering in the trees and follow them, regardless that they'd been warned to stay on the path.
