What is "the frying pan" the party lands in after their escape from the goblins? why is this troubling for the travelers? how are the questers delievered from the frying pan?

Although the have escaped the cave, the adventurers become trapped outside by the wolves who are allied with the goblins. Gandalf starts a fire, and the Lord of the Eagles comes and carries him away. More birds arrive to save the others.
