The Hobbit

What are these responses and what meanings do they carry? What do they learn from their encounters with the light?

Bilbo and the dwarves have varying responses to light in the chapter when they're in Mirkwood forest.

The forrest is pretty bleak. They can't tell night from day and they feel eyes are watching them. They see a flicker of light and are excited there is a fire, they see dwarves and the light goes out. This is very ominous and they feel what light is there is playing tricks on them.
