The Hobbit

In Chapter 8

Why does Thorin refuse to reveal his true mission to the King of the Wood-elves?

What evidence is there that the Wood-elves are "Good People"?

Thorin, at this point, doesn't know the Wood Elves are good. He doesn't know they are merely suspicious of visitors. He doesn't want to put the others in jail. Even though they throw Thorin in the Dungeon, they still feed him which shows they mean no harm.
