By chapter 8, we see that Bilbo also has stopped complaining about being scared or away from the comforts of the shire. Bilbo, for example, kills the giant spider without the aid of the dwarves or Gandalf's magic. As the novel progresses, Bilbo no longer longs for the safety and routine of the Shire. Bilbo is much more worldly. His sense of identity and purpose transcends life in the shire.
