How does bilbo come to understand Beorn

At first Bilbo does not know what to think of Beorn. Later Bilbo understands that Beorn is an allie. Beorn outfits the expedition for the journey through Mirkwood with ponies, weapons, and other supplies. He knows that Beorn is a formidable opponent if they are attacked.
