Explain how Bilbo and the dwarves were warned about the approaching treasure hunters?

They were warned that the elves were marching to Lonely Mountain order to gain a share of the treasure. Roac also told the dwarves that the Lake-men weren't very happy with them, and they needed the treasure to help rebuild.
