Day 2

The Help Lesson Plan

Discussion of Thought Questions

  1. 1

Why does Skeeter assume it won’t work for Aibileen to write her stories down? What happens instead?

Skeeter judges Aibileen. She assumes Aibileen won't be good at writing. This is racist and elitist. In reality, Aibileen writes every day and is a good writer. Just because Aibileen has not been educated like Skeeter has does not make her any less smart and capable. Address the differing dialects of their narration and ask students if they, too, expected Aibileen to not write well because of her narration. You can also discuss different forms of intelligence and the value society puts on them. Doctors are revered, but our country wouldn't run without plumbers, either.
