The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter Metaphors and Similes

Dirty jokes (Metaphor)

Blount was constantly drunk. It seemed that no one had seen him sober since his appearance in the town. However, no one minded his presence. In spite of the fact that he was slightly annoying, his stories were untrustworthy and his jokes often “got raw he had to be hushed up with beer”, Biff even liked him. Although Blount was the loudest person in the restaurant, no one paid him attention expect for Biff and the Mute.

To make attractive (Metaphor)

Mick helps her mother with taking care about the younger ones a lot. It seemed that she was expected to do it. Whenever Mick took Ralph for a walk, she made him wear a cap “made of lace and all embroidered.” It was a little bit small for him, but it “gave him a face,” made him look as an attractive baby.

Unpleasant (Metaphor)

Mick was the black sheep of the family. Not to mention that she hadn’t friends of her own age to spend her free time with, so she felt lonely. She had sisters, but one of them was too lazy and the second one was “full of worms.” The latter was interested only in Hollywood movies and her appearance.

Useless (Simile)

Singer was blessed with a quick and sharp mind. When he was a schoolboy, he “learned the lessons before the rest of the pupils.” The only thing he couldn’t do was to become used to speak with his lips. His tongue felt “like a whale,” heavy. It seemed to be more natural for him to use his hands to express himself.

A tender look (Simile)

Blount seemed to be rather interested in Singer. He tried to tell him something, to convey a certain message. They were “both looking at each other.” The mute’s eyes “were cold and gentle as a cat’s”, he seemed to be very attentive, fully concentrated on Blount.

Nice people (Simile)

Portia didn’t want to listen to her father. It was true that neither she nor her husband nor her siblings were educated. It didn’t matter for her. The main thing was that her Highboy and Willie were “good as gold.” They were decent people.
