Basically Professor Pieixoto uses the notes as a sort of historical text/ Biblical text. He says that a combination of illness and pollution had led to infertility problems. THe narrator is apparently a woman who spells out the rolls for women like they were the Ten Commandments or something. Basically women were to be nameless vessels borne to serve men of high status.
