What are four possible definitions of mayday?
This is interesting. I know "mayday" is the international code for ships in distress. Atwood used this on purpose as a code from one Handmaid to another, a sign of distress. As well it represents a grapevine; it is a tool to filter information through each other. I would really like to know if there are more though.
