How does Atwood effectively present the different roles of the Handmaid/Commander`s Wife after a birth?

The handmaids help with the birth while the Commander's wife gets to sit behind her. The wives coo over the baby while the handmaids work; they name the baby, and then they send the mother away for her new assignment.
