why does Arab chose to go to the prison at the end of the story "The Guest"?

At the end of the story arab chose the path that lead him to the prison because he surrenderd. He murdered someone and he was guilty of it, so he don't want to hold the burden of the murder. The arab was ashamed not for himself but he he was ashamed for his nation that he is a bad example for his nation.
