Explain the relationship between Daru’s surroundings and his personality. What is the most import to Daru? Why does he feel exiled from the rest of the world?

Daru likes the empty mountain expanses. His surroundings remind him that he is sacrificing and serving his Arab brothers. Unfortunately the Arabs largely see Daru as a French occupier. Daru still feels at home alone in his little schoolhouse. He longs to be an Algerian: everywhere else, especially France, he feels exiled.
