Camus wrote this novel in the years prior to the Algerian War, and thus was very concerned that the novel might possible lead to increased conflict between the French and the Arabs if he wasn't careful in depicting his characters in an unflattering fashion. It does however, reflect Camus' philosophical ideas and his sense of morality. His careful portrayal of the Arabs however caused the narrative to become ambiguous........ as a result, his true vision never quite comes through on paper.
