Wolfsheim was a fictional character, but the scandal (1919) itself was all too real and a major new story at the time (The Great Garsby was published six years later). This was Fitzgerald's way of infusing some recent history into the novel.... a scandal that rocked the world of professional baseball and revealed questionable characters like Arnold Rothstein, on whom Wolfsheim is based.
