Simply put, Gatsby was obsessed with Daisy. He was obsessed with the illusion he had built up of Daisy rather than Daisy herself. The longing for her became the focus of his life. Gatsby figuratively tries to erase the five years that they had been apart. Unfortunately, for Gatsby, all his money could not alter time.
