Myrtle doesn't like her husband because she believes him to be less than a man, that he lacks masculinity. This is the reason she's drawn to Tom. For whatever sick reason, she doesn't mind his abuse and during the course of the novel even baits her husband, "throw me and down and beat me, you dirty little coward!"
