why are there music references in ch 6? like "lighted top of the steps, where Three O'Clock in the Morning,a neat, sad little waltz..."

Three O’clock in the Morning" is a popular good-night waltz played in the 1920's. All the music references connect with the seemingly care free party atmosphere of the time. Language and music had its own grand style to fit the opulence of the time.
