Who is Michaelis, and why does he think Myrtle ran into the street?

Michaelis was a young Greek man who ran the coffee shop near the garage. When Michaelis had visited the garage earlier George had Myrtle locked upstairs. He was there when she ran into the street.

 

"He believed that Mrs. Wilson had been running away from her husband, rather than trying to stop any particular car."
