I've always found this quote to be the most telling..... Daisy, only moments prior, was brave and almost challenging until Tom brought up the dirt he'd collected on Gatsby. Afterward, Daisy becomes completely defeated.

‘PLEASE, Tom! I can’t stand this any more.’ Her frightened eyes told that whatever intentions, whatever courage she had had, were definitely gone. (Page 142)
