Gatsby is living a illusion. The other filthy rich people in West Egg have old money or are newly rich. Gatsby, however, has a sordid past. He has gotten rich from the avails of crime. As these very superficial people unravel emotionally, Gatsby's illusion starts to crumble as well. Sooner or later, skeletons come out of the closet and Gatsby's are no exception.
