The title begs the question if Gatsby is indeed great or is Fitzgerald merely being ironic? Gatsby truly is great from an "American Dream" point of view. He comes from a modest background and becomes one of the richest men in East Egg. Even though he deals in alcohol during prohibition, he is a self-made man. On the other hand his life is very much an illusion and Gatsby remains the enigma at the center of his own fatntasy. He pines away for a woman that clearly doesn't deserve such attention and nothing can change his mind. So is Gatsby great? That is a matter of opinion.
