The yacht of Dan Cody is a symbol of money, the kind of money that Gatsby will strive for. 

Gatsby's parents are examples of the the illusion Gatsby has created for himself. Gatsby has simply cut them out of his past. His parents are described as  “shiftless and unsuccessful farm people.”  Gatsby does everything he can to make is past look different.
