The mood at the Buchanan home is friendly and relaxed...... at least until the phone rings. The call belies the assumption that Tom and Daisy have it all and creates a tension that hovers around their fragile relationship. The revelation that Tom has a mistress, that Daisy is aware of it, and that it seems to be common knowledge allows Fitzgerald to set the scene for what's to come. As readers we become curious..... we're symathetic, appalled, and curious all at the same time.
