Nick is from the Midwest and has strong, traditional values. He is a good friend and knows how to show his friendship, especially seen when he takes care of Gatsby's funeral. He has a good education, and he is in New York to learn about the business of bonds so that he can be monetarily successful. He sees many of the conflicts of the novel as confusing, but his common sense works out that in the end, the fast life of New York is not a good life. He returns to his Midwestern roots.
