Interestingly time reflects the mood of the characters (here as it does throughout the novel) and their locations. When they are in the Valley of the Ashes time moves slowly; Myrtle moves slowly, Wilson fades away. When Tom and Nick go into New York time speeds up. They quickly get away from the Valley and get to the apartment. Once at the apartment the description of the party gets cloudy and circular as they get more drunk. Time slows down again as Nick gets tired and passes out.
