Gatsby's obsessive hope inspires us to at least look for a little hope in ourselves. Gatsby has a goal and immense wealth is just a step towards this goal (being with Daisy again). Although Gatsby's view of Daisy is flawed, he manages to re-create himself. He does not settle for the destiny of being mediocre. Gatsby's dreams are big and he achieves them without old or inherited money.  Although Gatsby's wealth comes from criminal activity, there is something romantic about the idea of bootlegging in the 1920's.
