In the exposition, we learn how Gatsby fell in love with Daisy. We hear of their love, come to understand his lack of wealth was a problem, and then he's sent off to war..... Daisy promises to wait. After a while, Daisy backs out of that promise and marries... Gatsby is devastated by the loss.
