what do we know about gatsby at this early point in the novel

The first appearance of Gatsby in Chapter One has a religious aura to it and Gatsby himself seems an enigma: Nick speculates that Gatsby has "come out to determine what share of our local heavens [was his]." Gatsby is a strange eccentric solitary figure basking in the dim green light that shows from across the harbor.
